When and how to visit Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is a province located in northern Vietnam, about 90 kilometers south of Hanoi, in the Red River Delta.
Ninh Binh province offers a special charm throughout the year, but the ideal times to visit are between April and June, or from September to October, when the weather is mild and rainfall is rare, allowing for full enjoyment of outdoor activities.
In spring, from February to April, the region is mild and pleasant, with lush green rice fields and local festivals enlivening the atmosphere. Summer, from May to August, is hot and humid, but it's the perfect time to admire the golden rice fields, although be prepared for the heat.
Fall, from September to November, marks the peak tourist season, with dry weather and beautiful landscapes of ready-to-harvest rice fields. Finally, winter, from December to January, is cooler and quieter, offering a perfect opportunity to avoid crowds and discover the province in a more intimate light.
To get to Ninh Binh from Hanoi
Bus from Giap Bat bus station or limousine bus (100,000 to 150,000 VND, about 2 hours).
From Ho Chi Minh City: Flight to Hanoi, then bus.
Train: A quieter option, tickets available online or at the station.
To get around Ninh Binh province, renting a motorbike is a convenient option, with a daily cost of about 100,000 to 150,000 VND, as tourist attractions are often far apart. However, if you are traveling in a group, sharing the cost of a taxi can be a more economical and friendly way to explore the region.

Trang An Landscape Complex

Tam Coc

Mua Caves (Hang Mua)
The legend of Emperor Tran Thai Tong, who loved watching dance performances at this site, gave rise to the name "Hang Mua," or "Dance Cave."
To reach the top of Mua Mountain, one must undertake a steep climb of nearly 500 steps, but the effort is highly rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Tam Coc mountains and vast surrounding rice fields, traversed by the Ngo Dong River.
The caves themselves house intricate sculptures and ancient shrines, adding to the charm and historical significance of this tourist site.
Located just 5 km from Tam Coc, Hang Mua cave is easily accessible by scooter, after a short 5-minute ride, making it an ideal excursion to discover the wonders of the region.

Tam Coc Bich Dong
Bich Dong was initially built in 1428 under the reign of the Le dynasty kings, then restored and expanded in 1705 by two Buddhist monks. Perched on a cliff, this stunning and elegant pagoda consists of three levels: the Ha pagoda, the Trung pagoda, and the Thuong pagoda, built in stairs along the mountain. Surrounded by lush vegetation and a tranquil pond, it offers an ideal place for reflection and meditation.
Located in Dam Khe village, about 2 km north of the Tam Coc pier, the pagoda is accessible via a stone bridge spanning a lotus pond, then stone steps leading to the Trung and Thuong pagodas, offering a peaceful and serene approach to this sacred place.

Van Long Lagoon
Van Long Lagoon, located in Gia Vien district, is a natural wonder of serene and picturesque beauty, spanning over 3,500 hectares.
Dubbed the "waveless bay" due to its calm and reflective water surface, it is the largest wetland reserve in northern Vietnam. A boat tour will allow you to be lulled by the tranquil waters while admiring impressive views of the limestone mountains and surrounding rice fields.
But Van Long Lagoon is also a haven for biodiversity, housing rare and endangered species such as the Delacour's langur, a critically endangered primate, as well as over 70 exceptional bird species, making it a unique and valuable place for nature lovers.
The lagoon features numerous caves, some of which are accessible to visitors, like the Fish Cave (Hang Ca) and the Turtle Cave.

Bai Dinh Pagoda
Bai Dinh Pagoda is an exceptional Buddhist complex that stands out as one of the largest pagodas in Asia, attracting a large number of tourists and pilgrims.
Founded in 1136 by Grand Priest Nguyen Minh Khong, the ancient pagoda was restored and expanded in 2003 to become the current complex, spanning over 700 hectares. The site elegantly combines traditional Vietnamese elements with monumental architecture, including iconic structures such as the Tam The Hall, the bell tower, and the Xa Loi stupa.
Bai Dinh Pagoda holds several remarkable records, including the title of the tallest stupa in Southeast Asia, with an impressive height of 100 meters, as well as the longest corridor of Arhat statues and the largest bronze bell in Vietnam. Located in Gia Vien district, about 95 km south of Hanoi and 15 km from Ninh Binh city, Bai Dinh Pagoda is a must-visit place to discover the cultural and architectural richness of Vietnam.

Hoa Lu
The ancient capital of Hoa Lu is an iconic place in Ninh Binh that combines history and natural beauty, offering a must-visit attraction for history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
In 968, King Dinh Bo Linh established Hoa Lu as the capital of Dai Co Viet, the ancient name of Vietnam, marking the beginning of a period that lasted until 980 under the Dinh dynasty. Subsequently, Hoa Lu continued to serve as the capital under the earlier Ly dynasty, from 980 to 1009, and briefly under the Ly dynasty, from 1009 to 1010, until King Ly Thai To decided to move the capital to Thang Long, present-day Hanoi, in 1010. Besides its historical significance, Hoa Lu is also renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, with imposing limestone mountains and picturesque rice fields surrounding it, creating a unique and spectacular landscape.
