The Ha Giang loop off the beaten track: myth or reality?

The Ha Giang loop, once a well-kept secret for adventurous travelers, has become a must-see destination in Vietnam. Its breathtaking scenery, authentic ethnic villages and winding roads are attracting more and more tourists. And it's not unusual for us to be asked the question: “Is it still possible to get off the beaten track and enjoy an authentic experience in this region?”. Let's find out.

Saturated routes

Unsurprisingly, the most popular itineraries in Ha Giang are those that pass through the region's main points of interest.
In fact, most visitors discover Ha Giang via two routes that have become classics. The first, condensed over three days, links Hanoi to Dong Van and then Meo Vac before the return journey. The second, a more comfortable four-day itinerary, adds a stopover in Ha Giang itself, offering a gradual immersion in the region: Hanoi-Ha Giang - Dong Van via Yen Minh - Dong Van to Meo Vac - Ha Giang.

Off the beaten track: alternative itineraries

For a more authentic experience, we invite you to get off the beaten track. Choose a stay of at least four to seven days, allowing you to explore the hidden treasures of the Ha Giang loop.

The ideal tour

Our ideal itinerary takes seven days. The journey begins in Nam Dam, a Dao village where you'll spend your first night with local people. The next two days take you through the mountains to Du Gia. This extended stay in the valley offers hikes to hidden waterfalls and a real immersion in local life.
The journey continues via Mau Due to Meo Vac, famous for its traditional market, then on to Dong Van via the majestic Ma Pi Leng Pass overlooking the Nho Que River. Dong Van's old quarter and the Hmong king's palace are well worth a visit. The last few days take you through the karst landscapes of Yen Minh before returning to Ha Giang.

Keys to a successful adventure along the Ha Giang loop

The success of this adventure hinges on a few essential points.
  • Travel between November and April, during the dry season. For transportation, you have two options: motorcycle rental, which requires an international license, or an accompanied tour.
  •
  • Accommodation, especially homestays, should be booked in advance to guarantee an authentic experience.
  •
  • Don't neglect the health aspect: a first-aid kit and recommended vaccinations are a must.
  •
  • Finally, and perhaps most importantly, adopt a respectful attitude towards the environment and the local cultures that welcome you.

An important point to note: roadside checks have intensified in recent years. Make sure you have the necessary permits if you opt for motorcycling, or choose the serenity of a guided tour.
