What is a Geoparc?
It is a unique and unified geographical area where sites and landscapes of international geological importance are managed according to a global concept of protection, education and sustainable development. They are recognized by UNESCO and the Global Geopark Network and must meet rigorous standards in geology, protection, education and sustainable development. As major tourist destinations, they must offer visitors the opportunity to discover the beauty and diversity of the Earth while contributing to the protection of the environment. The world has more than 160 geoparks, including 3 in Vietnam. Located in the north of the Blue Dragon Country, Dong Van is located in the province of Ha Giang. For the record, Vietnam is the Southeast Asian country with the most geoparks.
Where is the Dong Van Geopark located?
Perched between 1,000 and 1,600 m above sea level, the Dong Van karst plateau belongs to the province of Ha Giang, in northern Vietnam. It literally hypnotizes all visitors by its exceptional beauty where karst limestone mountains, green valleys, traditional villages and breathtaking panoramas mix and mingle. Beyond its natural wonders with remarkable geological features, the Geopark is also home to various ethnic communities with preserved cultural value traditions. The region has 17 local communities including the Mong, Dao, Tay, Lo Lo or the Nung.
It is the combination of its geological, geomorphological, ecological and cultural values that has allowed its inclusion in the Global Geopark Network, while attracting irresistibly visitors, hikers and other bush road enthusiasts.
How to get to Dong Van from Ha Noi?
The most common way is to take a bus. These depart from the My Dinh bus station in Ha Noi to complete their journey to the Ha Giang bus station. The journey takes about 10 hours and costs between 150,000 and 200,000 VND (6.50 to 8.00 USD). Alternatively, you can take a private van. The journey takes about 8 hours at a cost of about 2,000,000 VND (80.00 USD).

What is the best time to enjoy the karst plateau of Dong Van?
Ideally, we will opt for the dry season, from late September to early December and from March to April. The weather is generally sunny and the temperatures are pleasant. The flowering period of buckwheat, which takes place from October to November, is also a popular time to enjoy Dong Van. It is best to avoid the rainy season, which runs from May to October, as it does not really promote hiking.

The Dong Van Geopark offers a wide range of accommodation for all budgets and tastes, ranging from small family hotels to large international hotels, from hostels to guest houses, there is a wide variety of choices, provided you are not looking for five-star luxury hotels.

The loop of Ha Giang
This famous 4-day itinerary is a great way to discover the main attractions of the Geopark. It passes through Ma Pi Leng Pass, Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Lung Cu Flag Pole and Sung La Valley.
- • Ma Pi Leng Pass and Nho Que River: considered one of the most beautiful and dangerous passes in Vietnam, Ma Pi Leng connects the districts of Dong Van and Meo Vac. It covers 20 kilometres and is located at an altitude of over 1,500 metres. The pass offers magnificent views with steep cliffs, green forests shrouded in clouds and the Nho Que River flowing to the bottom of the canyon. The turquoise color of the river Nho Que is one of the most beautiful in Vietnam. It is possible to descend by boat or kayak, or to make a zip line crossing.
- • Quan Ba Heaven Gate and Fairy Mountain: These two rock formations are about 45 km from the town of Ha Giang and offer beautiful views of the karst plateau. A natural opening between two mountains that gives the impression of entering another world is the door to heaven. The mountain of the fairies is composed of two rounded hills with the shapes of female breasts.
- • The flag pole of Lung Cu is a popular tourist destination. It offers panoramic views of the limestone mountains of the Dong Van Geopark. Built in 1972 during the Vietnam War, it is located on top of Rong Mountain, at an altitude of 1,700 metres.
Difficulty level: In reality, the degree of difficulty depends on the duration of the trip and the chosen route. Therefore, the three-day trip is considered moderately difficult, the four-day trip is considered difficult, and the five-day trip is classified as very difficult. You can also opt for different routes, more or less difficult. For example, it is believed that the Ma Pi Leng pass route is more difficult than the traditional route.
It is highly recommended to be in good physical condition and have an experience of hiking in the mountains, regardless of your level. It is obvious that the hiker will be well equipped, including comfortable walking shoes, clothing adapted to weather conditions and a full backpack.

Xín Man Valley Trail
Hikers who wish to admire the beauty of the natural landscapes of the Geopark will certainly choose this course that lasts two days and measures 6 km. The trail starts in the village of Xín Man, about 10 kilometers from the city of Dong Van, then cross the valley with magnificent views of rice terraces, traditional villages and karst formations. Although the trail is fairly easy to walk, it is crucial to wear comfortable hiking shoes. Along the trail there are several places where you can stop to admire the view.
Difficulty level: The Xín Man Valley Trail and its beautiful panoramas are for hikers of all levels.
The path of ethnic minority villages
A beautiful 3 days/16 km hike that allows hikers to discover the rich culture of local ethnic minorities. It crosses the traditional villages of Nam Khat with their charming wooden masions, Sung Trai (famous for its rice terraces), Lung Cu with its flag pole and Ma Le, which has a distinctive ethnic culture. Sa Phin, Lung Cu and Ma Pi Leng are other options. However, once on the land of Sa Phin, be sure to visit the house of the Vuong family, whose structure is strongly influenced by traditional Chinese architecture, especially its terracotta tiles and decorations in Chinese script.
Difficulty level: The trail of ethnic minority villages is an excellent option for hikers of all levels. It offers a beautiful view of the Dong Van Geopark and gives an enriching cultural experience.
