Route: Hanoi - Ba Be National Park

  • Day 1: Hanoi - Ba Be National Park (L/D)
    • Are you ready to start a fabulous adventure tour Vietnam ? Our tour guide will pick you up by car at your hotel around 7:30-8:00am, as an early start is necessary for all we have in store for you today. On the way to Ba Be National Park, we will stop in a local village to enjoy lunch in a restaurant, before our route takes us up through the mountains and tea plantations on the road to Ba Be National Park.

You will then travel to the Tay village of Coc Toc, where the houses are built in traditional Tay fashion on stilts. The local Tay population is extremely friendly to visitors and will welcome you with open arms, introducing you to their way of life central pillars of which are fishing on the lake and rice-farming.

This is where you will spend the night in a homestay, to really get an intimate look at Tay culture and daily life. After checking in at the homestay, your afternoon will be free to spend as you wish, though we recommend going for a walk to explore the beautiful surroundings. Following this, we will take you to Hua Ma Cave, featuring thousands of stalactites and stalagmites.

The rest of the day is again yours to do with as you please, though we offer the optional activities of guided walks/bike rides around Coc Toc Village and kayaking trips on the lake. If you’d rather spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the serene views, then that’s also an option.

      - Highlights and activities: Hua Ma Cave, Ethnic Village, and a 3-5km walk.

Your guide will start off by taking you to Coc Toc Village, visiting the local Tay fishermen who live there, before crossing Pelu Stream and navigating some steep terrain. You’ll be greatly rewarded for the effort, as once you reach a higher altitude you will be assailed by magnificent views of the mountains.

As you journey ever higher, you will stop in a H’mong village, where a picnic lunch will be prepared for you. After you’ve eaten and rested, you will continue through the vast mountain ranges and valleys to see the stilt houses of the Dzao people and visit one of their local schools before visiting a second H’mong Village and returning to your homestay by the lake.

Highlights and activities: Tropical forest, ethnic villages, and a 12-15 km trek

It’s up to you how to spend your time on the boat, whether it’s relaxing and enjoying the views or going for a swim in the cool waters to refresh yourself. The views consist of stunning karst formations all around you covered with patches of wild vegetation and a rich wildlife.

The boat will then continue along the Nang River, giving you a chance to explore the caves of Puong Grotto where you can marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites created through river erosion, as well as observe the thousands-strong bat colony that lives here.

After your exploration of the lake, you will have the chance rest as we drive you back to Hanoi, taking in the beautiful scenery along the way. lovely place to escape the hustle and bustle of Hanoi City
Review of: Adventure to Ba Be National Park 3 days 2 nights
We did a 2 night stay at Mr Linh's home stay Ba Be lake to see the other side of Vietnam. I will point out that this is more of a backpacking hostel than a homestay We had a private room that was big comfortable and clean with good airconditioning. There are also dormitory type rooms and the bathrooms were very big clean and there was plenty of hot water.. The breakfast was basic but very good especially the pancakes and bananas with honey. The countryside and villages made a great adventure and the tour guide Tung and Thuy our homestay host were fantastic. They were always checking to see if there was anything they could do for us and were great company. Both spoke exceptionally good English so communication was no problem at all. It was refreshing to have someone that could explain about the various caves we visited and villages we saw as we travelled along the Nang river. I am sure we would not have enjoyed our trip nearly as much with out them. Read Less

Pioneers on Ba Be Lake 3 days 2 nights
Review of: Adventure to Ba Be National Park 3 days 2 nights
We booked the above as a private tour.

Why do folk go abroad and do these sort of trips? We like to explore, discover, gain new experiences. Mr Linh understands this perfectly. His strapline on his website 'we take you to parts other can't reach' is exactly what you get.

The drive to Ba Be from Hanoi is long but incredibly interesting (more interesting than the drive to Halong Bay). You drive through lots of towns, villages and countryside and yo

The homestay is simple but beautifully built accomodation in the similar style of the local housing. A great hot shower in the shared bathroom and I was impressed to see there was air con in your little room (and mosquito nets) too. I think we were outside tourist season and it was a real treat having the homestay and most of the national park practically to ourselves!

What I loved about this trip is that you felt you were seeing some really special things, not what you get in your average package tour. We were taken to a local Tay Village and you can see how people lived, see their homes and how they lived off the land. Another day, we popped to one chap's house who ran a shop and our guide brought some food with us which we cooked and ate there - how special is that?! We were taken to the local market, literally the only westerners there and market was for locals - selling all sorts from meat to clothes - watching all this and taking it all in was very special, felt very honoured to be there.

Ba Be National Park itself is a little haven. Highly recommend cycling and kayaking - a great way to see this incrediblly special place.

Our tour guide Manh - was amazing, really looked after you. Great English, interesting chap and did the more intimate bits of the trip (like visiting the Tay people's homes) with the utmost discretion.

Mr Linh - very impressed with his business. He understands what travellers want. I believe he supports the local Tay community (which is why we could potter around and see how these people lived). His website is very helpful - detailed breakdown on how much physical activity you're doing on each, what to pack - invaluable.

Highly recommend you add Ba Be National Park with Mr Linh to your trip itinerary - an unforgettable place, a wonderful experience. Read Less

Review of: Adventure to Ba Be National Park 3 days 2 nights
I had a fantastic trip to Ban Gioc & Ba Be Lake with a small group tour, once of the few places that actually provide this and not a private tour. As a lone traveller I wanted to meet some others along the way.

The homestays were lovely and catered for us very well, our bellies were full and the accommodation was great. They were also great fun.

Ba Be Lake was lovely and not too crowded, it is very peaceful apart from the cockerels who will wake up when they get up haha.

Ban Gioc was beautiful, you can’t swim there but can get your feet in and can get very close, a little boat goes close to the waterfall for some good pictures which is included in your price with Mr Linh’s.

Giang was a great laugh, always joking and was an AMAAAAZING tour guide.

I would definitely recommend if you want something a bit different to other tourists spots like Ha Long Bay, I much more enjoyed this trip. Read Less

Thoroughly enjoyable trekking through the jungle and villages. Our guide for the Trek was Son, he was very pleasant and gave us good insight into the way of life for the villages.
Homestay at Mr Linh's was far better than we expected, facilities were clean and comfortable and the food, wow it was great! Definitely needed the hike after eating way too much at each meal.

Stunning trekking, caving, and boating experience in Ba Be National Park
Review of: Adventure to Ba Be National Park 3 days 2 nights
Our guide Billy picked us up at our hotel at the expected time and entertained us on the drive to Ba Be with many interesting facts and stories about Vietnam and his own experiences. He was always great fun and knew a lot about local culture, geology, fauna and flora. On our 3 day and 2 night stay in Ba Be we visited two interesting caves, did a wonderful trek to hidden tribal villages of the Hmong and Tay people, had the opportunity to swim and kayak in the lake and enjoyed really good ...Read Morefood at Mr Linh’s homestay. Mr Linh senior himself was there too and had great fun teaching us Vietnamese drinking rhymes over a glass of rice wine. The boat tour on the last day on the lake and the river was particularly awesome. The accommodation was clean. They even had WiFi (good enough to stream). We danced in the rain, enjoyed amazing views on the mountains, made friends with local dogs that followed us all day and marveled at a thousand bats in the caves. In short: The tour surpassed our expectations. We enjoyed it a lot. Read Less

An amazing, unspoiled, quiet, beautiful place well worth the visit. Away from the crowds.
We spent our first week in the in Hoi An and Hue which was great but manic. So much going on, so busy. Ba Be National park was the opposite, so quiet and unspoiled. A beautiful place and not touristy.

Fantastic family three day trip to Ba Be Lake
Review of: Adventure to Ba Be National Park 3 days 2 nights
We are a family of four with two teenagers and we thoroughly enjoyed Mr Linh's two night tour of Ba Be Lake. Loi, our fantastic guide collected us from our hotel in Hanoi and we had an easy journey to Be Be Lake in the very clean and comfortable, air conditioned minibus through many fascinating villages and dramatic scenery. Our guide Loi was absolutely superb and really well informed about the local area, flora and fauna and cultures. He is considerate and caring and he did everything he could to make our stay as a family as enjoyable as possible, he adapted the itinerary to the weather so we did some cycling, waving at locals fishing and passing rice farmers and water buffalo, walking along trails by the lake, kayaking and we saw amazing caves and a waterfall. We spent lots of time out on the lake in the wonderful boat including a lovely swim in the middle of the lake one morning when we seemed to be the only people out on the water. We enjoyed some rock jumping too!
The food throughout was delicious, plentiful and freshly prepared - it was among the best we've had during our entire trip - and all the team at the homestay were very helpful, friendly and caring.

We would definitely recommend this trip for families, it felt very un-touristy and relaxed but we really felt like we saw and did a huge amount over the three days. Thank you. Read Less

Great trip for a quiet-loving couple
Review of: Adventure to Ba Be National Park 3 days 2 nights
The three-day experience out at Ba Be was a little expensive, but given that we were pampered, the only customers in the van, among very few people at the quiet home stay at Ba Be Lake, and got to bike and hang out with the charming Mike (Minh Tu?), it was more than worth it.
